What makes you different?

You’ve heard that question a thousand times in a thousand different contexts.

But here’s what I want to know…

What makes you different from the people who never change?
From those old dogs playing the same old tricks?
From those who try and try and never succeed?

How can you be sure that you don’t become one of them?

Two simple words.

The Practice.

I go to networking events, I mingle with colleagues – I talk to people wherever I go and I hear a lot of the same old stuff.

"I’m a life-long learner."

"I’m a seeker."

"I’m ready for more."

Great. But that alone will never get you there.

For many, the initial glory of "EUREKA - I get it!" feels so huge that they believe that the knowing alone will change their lives.

Here’s the cold hard truth - change is not an intellectual pursuit.

"I get it" is only step one. And for most, the only step they take. In fact, many stay in the cycle of "I get it" over and over as they "learn" their way down an enlightenment rabbit hole.

"I’ll try it" (meaning a new perspective or a new approach) is the next step, and a much smaller group find themselves here.

But it’s in step 3, "I’ll practice it" that change either happens or it doesn’t. And I can tell you from experience that few are willing to commit to such a pursuit.

Why do you think most assessments have such statistical significance?

Because most people avoid The Practice and so most people remain pretty much the same throughout their lifespan.

Change is a literal practice.

Whatever you’re hoping to change about yourself or about your life, you’ll need to practice it.

You’ll need to fail and try again.
You’ll need to feel the fear and do it anyway.
You’ll need to trust yourself and keep going.

And as crazy as it may sound, The Practice itself is remarkably simple...

This Week: Committing to The Practice

1. Picture the version of yourself that is 100% unleashed - the you that is unabashedly you - and write down everything you can think of to describe her.

2. Read what you wrote and cross off every single thing that’s there because of some outside expectation of who you should be.

3. Repeat steps one and two until what you have written is so REAL that it makes your eyes well with tears.

4. Use that image of yourself as the filter for Your Practice. With every step, every choice, ask yourself the question "does this get me closer to or further from that version of me."

Over and over.

Every. Single. Day.

You’ll fail.
You’ll disrupt the status quo here and there.
You’ll second guess yourself.

Keep going. The Practice is the only way forward. Use that version of YOU as the filter for everything you do and you’ll reclaim her, you’ll become her, you will live her life - your REAL life - instead of anything short of it.
